Annaberg-Buchholz is a 500 year old town situated in a beautiful landscape on the west side of the 832 meter high Pöhlberg mountain. Originally the whole area was covered by dense Miriquidi forest. At the end of the 15th century, intense silvermining started colonisation. In 1496, the town "Neu-stadt am Schreckenberg" was founded by the sovereign "Georg der Bärtige", that since 1501 has been known as Annaberg. In 1501,the elector Friedrich der Weise founded Buchholz a town not far from Annaberg. Since 1945, the two towns have been joined as one.
